Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers can get involved with the American Red Cross in multiple ways. The chapter has opportunities available in Emergency Services, Blood Services, Health & Safety Services, and Fundraising. We also have administrative opportunities available for volunteers in the chapter house.

Disaster Services:

Disaster volunteers are needed to work with staff to assist families in the community affected by local and national disasters. Training is required in all positions and is provided by the chapter free of charge.
DAT Team Volunteers: These are members of the Disaster Action Team. Teams are on call for one-week intervals and in charge of responding to single family fires and other local disasters after hours and on weekends.
Safety Patrol Volunteers: These volunteers are assigned to check and replace batteries in smoke detection devices in the homes of the elderly or disabled in our community during the months of October and April.
DSHR Volunteers: These volunteers are trained and eligible to be assigned to work on national disasters when called upon. DSHR volunteers must commit to serve a minimum of two weeks on national assignment. Deployment is not guaranteed, and most national volunteers also work on the local level, usually as a member of DAT.

Armed Forces Emergency Services:

AFES (or SAF) volunteers are part of a team who help the Red Cross relay emergency messages between military personnel and residents of Alamance and Caswell Counties.
Military Rotation Team: These members handle the after-hour communication response for a one-week or one-month interval.

Blood Services:

Blood Services volunteers work with staff to assist donors through the donation process at all blood drives in Alamance and Caswell Counties.
Greeter Volunteers: These volunteers greet and register donors as they arrive and guide them through the initial screening process.
Canteen Volunteers: Here, people serve food and drinks, offer encouragement to donors to sign up to donate again, and provide recognition to donors. They also watch donors for 15 to 20 minutes to make sure a donor does not have a reaction.
Volunteer Coordinators: These volunteers supervise and assist at large drives and help recruit new volunteers.

Health & Safety Services:

Health & Safety volunteers are trained individuals who help the Red Cross provide education and training to members of the community.
Volunteer Instructors: These volunteers who donate their time to teach a variety of different health & safety related classes to the community, including CPR, First Aid, and Babysitter’s Training, among others.

Additional Administrative Support:

Fundraising/Special Event Volunteers: Volunteers who help plan, coordinate, and participate in special events that the Chapter holds or sponsors for local disaster relief.
Clerical Volunteers: Volunteers who work in our offices making blood donation phone calls or helping with bulk mailings.
Volunteer Committee Members: Volunteers who provide leadership and guidance to the chapter or to one of the service areas by serving as a member of a special committee.
